Magnetic powder for high density magnetic recording, and a magnetic recording medium using the magnetic powder

A magnetic powder for high density magnetic recording contains hexagonal ferrite particles having an average particle diameter in the range from 0.01 to 0.2 mu m and having a coercivity field strength in the range from 200 to 2000 Oe. The ferrite particles contain 0.05 to 1.0 Sn in the chemical formula. A magnetic recording medium has a coating of this magnetic powder on the surface of a substrate.
