In the case of an electrical gas-blast circuit breaker having two switching elements (1, 2) which, in the switched-on position, are bridged by a bridging switching element (3), the arc which is drawn is blasted with extinguishing gas over its entire length in the interruption path (T) during the switching-off process. For this purpose, the extinguishing gas is passed from an extinguishing-gas reservoir (10) exclusively via the channels (9) to the plate intermediate spaces (7) which are bounded in the insulating-material body (5) by radial plates (6). In the event of the interruption path being enlarged in order to cope with relatively large rated voltages, a simultaneous increase in the quantity of extinguishing gas required during the switching-off process is avoided by designing the gas-inlet cross-section in such a manner that its dimensions are smaller than the gas outlet cross-section. Arc blasting only via the plate intermediate spaces (7) leads to an improved radial flow, which is favourable for arc stabilization and cooling as well for deionizing the extinguishing-gas area surrounding the arc. <IMAGE>
