<p>A self-regulated Joule Thomson expansion valve (60) and cryostat (30) useful in miniaturized cryogenic gas liquefaction systems include a substantially frustroconical valve member (62) having a base portion (68) supported at the end of first means such as an elongate shaft (40) and a tapered valve seat (64) generally complementary to the valve member (62) and supported circumferentially adjacent a lengthwise portion of the valve member (62) by second means such as a sheath (50) slidably received upon the shaft (40). The valve member (62) and valve seat (64) taper down toward a free extremity (66) of the valve member (62), whereby opposing peripheral surfaces of the valve member (62) and valve seat (64) define a converging annular passageway (72) terminating at an annular expansion opening (74).</p> |
