<p>A process for making optical write-and-read recording disk media by applying a thin uniform layer of fluid composition between predetermined inside and outside diameters (34 and 36) of a substantially flat disk substrate (30). A circular bead (33) of the composition is injected into a gap established between a surface of the disk substrate (30) and an opposing surface (28) of a master mold (26). The bead (33) is applied at a radius such that the surface area of the disk substrate (30) between the predetermined inside diameter (34) and the radius is approximately equal to the surface area of the disk substrate (30) between the radius and the predetermined outside diameter (36). The gap between the substrate (30) and the mold (26) is closed such that the bead of composition spreads radially inwardly and outwardly from the radius to at least the predetermined inside and outside diameters (34 and 36) while allowing air ahead of the advancing composition to escape. The composition is metered through a long, slender nozzle (32) such that the composition wets both the surface (28) of the master mold (26) and the confronting surface of the substrate (30), forming a column (33) of fluid between them. Once the column (33) is formed, the nozzle (32) is withdrawn and the master mold (26) and substrate (30) are pressed together to establish a uniform and defect-free film. After the film is exposed to curing radiation, the master mold (26) and substrate (30) are separated. The hardened composition adheres to the substrate (30), creating a copy of the master (26).</p> |
