The program signal has associated sequential field-related identification code signals. The method comprises selecting a desired field-related identification code at which encoding of the signal is to begin. Continuously recurring vertical interval code signals are generated at predetermined intervals corresp. for similar intervals between groups of fields of the program signal. The code signals are compatible with the program signal. The field- related code signals associated. with the program signal are compared with the selected desired field-related identification code.
