A method of preparing a melt for the production of mineral wool wherein raw material for the melt is heated in a shaft furnace by combustion of coke while introducing oxygen-containing air through the tuyeres of the shaft furnace, and wherein part of the heat required is provided by introducing and combusting a mixture of oxygen and fuel in the central portion of the shaft furnace. A shaft furnace for carrying out the method comprises a burner pipe for introducing and combusting a mixture of oxygen and fuel in the central portion of the furnace chamber.
