The invention relates to a process for producing a high-grade needle-coke which is suitable for producing electric-steel graphite electrodes, utilising residual oils (resins, mazuts, masuts) obtained as a result of systematic hydrocatalytic treatment of vacuum gas oils and subsequent pyrolysis of the distillation residue produced in the separation of the reaction products. These residual oils can be employed on their own or as a mixture with other pyrolysis residual oils, if the mixtures have an aromaticity of at least 0.6.
