PURPOSE:To enhance the corrosion resistance and wear resistance of a magnetic material disposed on a substrate and to obtain excellent mechanical durability by forming a protective layer consisting of a mixture composed of a nonmetallic hard compd. and graphite fluoride on the magnetic medium. CONSTITUTION:The mixture layer 3 consisting of the mixture composed of the nonmetallic hard compd. and the graphite fluoride is formed by, for example, a sputtering method on the magnetic medium layer 2 disposed on the substrate 1. The nonmetallic hard compd. layer 4 may be otherwise formed on the magnetic medium layer 2, then the graphite fluoride layer 5 may be formed in succession by, for example, a sputtering method, etc. Such graphite fluoride has the lowest surface energy among the materials which can be currently produced; in addition, said graphite has excellent chemical stability such as acid resistance and alkali resistance, has good water repellency and exhibits an excellent protective effect to the magnetic medium layer 2 under high humidity. The strength over the entire part of the mixture layer 3 is enhanced by dispersing the hard compd. into the graphite fluoride. The excellent corrosion resistance and mechanical durability are thereby obtd. when this medium is applied to a magnetic disk.
