PURPOSE:To perform efficient single beam reception and multibeam reception by keeping the redundancy of a display map min., by dividing an array into a plurality of sub-arrays and providing a secondary beam former constituted so that the output of each of the sub-arrays is received to allow dense directional synthesis to extend over the whole of the array within a tolerant range of a roughly set directional azimuth angle. CONSTITUTION:The whole of an array is divided into a plurality of sub-arrays and primary beam forming is performed to each of the sub-arrays at first and secondary beam forming is subsequently performed with respect to the result of the primary beam forming. When a certain direction theta is set, the directional setting or correction of a sound line can be performed within a range permitting the sharpness of directionality formed by one sub-array A1 only by the secondary former 3 of the post-stage without changing the directionality of the sub- array. Hereupon, primary beam formers 21-2m may be allowed to roughly select, for example, left 30 deg., the front and right 30 deg. and the selection of this degree can be controlled, depending upon whether phase difference is provided between elements.
