NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [X is OH, halogen, alkoxy, 1-20C hydrocarbon group or -OM (M is alkali metal); Y1 and Y2 are H, 1-20C univalent organic group or halogen]. EXAMPLE:1,4-Bis(4-methoxycarbonylphenyl)-butadiyne. USE:A monomer for topochemical polymerization and for the production of various photo-functional material and high-rigidity polymeric molding material which are topochemical polymers. PREPARATION:A compound of formula I wherein Y1 and Y2 are same groups can be produced e.g. by the oxidative coupling of an ethynylbenzoic acid aralkyl ester of formula II (Y corresponds to the same Y1 and Y2; X is halogen) or ethynylbenzene aralkyl ketone in a solvent such as acetone in the presence of a catalyst system such as copper salts (e.g. cuprous chloride) and/or a tert- amine (e.g. tetraethyl ethylenediamine) at 20-80 deg.C.
