PURPOSE:To facilitate the correction of a grinding form and consequently shorten the operating time and reduce the cost by a method wherein the grinding of a tire tread is done by shifting a cutter through numerical control and the worn state of the cutter is estimated by measuring the outer diameter of a tire again and the required grinding is done by correcting the grinding form. CONSTITUTION:After rough grinding is done with a roughing cutter 20, a finishing cutter 21 is rotated by driving a cutter rotating motor 39 and at the same time the finishing cutter 21 is moved so as to describe the locus having the predetermined form by numerically controlling a right and left shifting motor 29 and a back and forth shifting motor 38 in order to perform finish grinding. After the finish grinding, the outer diameter of the tire after grinding is measured by bringing a touch roll 14 into contact with a tire T. When the resulting mean value of the outer diameter is less than or equal to the predetermined reference value, no correction of the grinding form is done for the next tire. If said mean value of the outer diameter is more than or equal to the predetermined reference value, the cutter is regarded as worn and grinding is done for the next tire by correcting the determined grinding form. Since the grinding of the next tire is done after the correction of the grinding form is done automatically in proportion to the order of the wear, the grinding within the certain fixed standard range is surely done at all times.
