Chloral and bromal nitrates are prepared by treating chloral or bromal with the equivalent amount of nitric acid in a dilute state at a temperature not exceeding 30 DEG C. The acid preferably contains 20--30 per cent by weight, whilst the temperature preferably lies between 10 and 25 DEG C. The products possess therapeutic properties. An example is given of the preparation of chloral nitrate, C Cl3.CH (OH) (ONO2). The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 defines the temperature as not exceeding 20 DEG C., preferably between +10 and -25 DEG C. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
