PURPOSE:To obtain an aromatic polyamide having excellent mechanical strength, especially tensile strength without coloring, by using tolylene-2,4-diisocyanate stored in an inert gas atmosphere as a raw material. CONSTITUTION:(A) Tolylene-2,4-diisocyanate stored in an inert gas (e.g. nitrogen or helium) is reacted with (B) terephthalic acid and/or isophthalic acid in the presence of an alkaline metallic compound in a solvent at >=100 deg.C to afford the aimed aromatic polyamide. Furthermore, the molar ration of the components (B) to (A) is preferably 0.95-1.10.
