PURPOSE:To contrive the continuous operation for a long period and to improve the efficiency in back washing by providing an ejector having the suction port at the upper part of a filter bed, and a discharging part penetrating the filter bed at the bottom of a treating vessel in the treating vessel wherein the filter bed consisting of a filter medium having <=1 sp.gr. is formed. CONSTITUTION:The filter bed 31 consisting of the filter medium 30 having <=1 sp.gr. is formed in the bottomed cylindrical treating vessel 1, and the ejector 15 having the suction port 24 at the upper part of the filter bed 31, and the discharge port 25 penetrating the filter bed 31 at the bottom of the treating vessel 1 is provided. The contaminant collected on the filter medium sucked by the turbulent flow in the ejector 15 or in the gap between the mediums is efficiently separated, the discharged filter medium is floated to form the filter bed, and the contaminant is settled at the bottom of the treating vessel. As a result, since back washing is carried out over the whole filter bed, a large amt. of the contaminant can be collected as compared with the conventional process, operation can be continued for a long period, the contaminant can be easily recovered and discharged, and the efficiency in back washing is improved.
