PURPOSE:To accurately discriminate the recording form of a picture information signal recorded on a recording medium, by judging a form as a digital recording form when a pilot signal having a specific frequency is included in the picture information signal reproduced from the recording medium. CONSTITUTION:A signal (f0) with the specific frequency representing (digital recording) other than four kinds of pilot signals f1-f4 is recorded in advance. An f0 detector 74 in an analog-digital discrimination circuit detects the presence/ absence of the pilot signal f0, A band-pass filter 76 passes a signal in the neighborhood of a clock frequency. A comparator 78 outputs a signal of logic '1' when the signal detected by the f0 detector 74 is provided with a level exceeding that of a threshold value Th1. A comparator 80 outputs the signal of logic '1' when the output level of the band-pass filter 76 exceeds a threshold value Th2. And when the signal of logic '1' is outputted from an AND gate 82, it is judged that the digital recording is performed on a magnetic tape 18.
