PRODUCTION OF EMULSION POLYMER COMPOSITION HAVING HIGH SOLID CONTENT

PURPOSE:To obtain a stable polymer composition having low viscosity and high solid content readily and inexpensively, by successively adding an unsaturated monomer and a surface active agent in the presence of a seed polymer prepared by a specific method and polymerizing. CONSTITUTION:In subjecting (A) an unsaturated monomer (e.g. ethylene or acrylic acid) capable of being subjected to emulsion polymerization to emulsion polymerization in the presence of (B) a surface active agent (e.g. sodium oleate) to give an emulsion polymer having 0.1-0.5mum average particle diameter and a monodispersed particle diameter distribution as a seed polymer and successively adding (A') an unsaturated monomer capable of being subjected to emulsion polymerization and (B') a surface active agent in the presence of the seed polymer, the weight ratio B'/A' of the unsaturated monomer A' and the surface active agent B' added is set 0.5-2 times the weight ratio B/A of the unsaturated monomer A and the surface active agent B throughout the whole emulsion polymerization reaction to give an emulsion polymer composition having high solid content.
