PURPOSE:To improve file processing performance by retrieving, referring to and updating file information labels with file names obtained from a file information label storing file used as keys in case the reference and updating of the file information labels are needed for file processing carried out on a low-speed access medium which is incapable of rewriting. CONSTITUTION:The file information labels are stored in an index order compiling file set on a high-speed access medium capable of rewriting. In case the reference and updating of the file information labels are needed for file processing on a low-speed access medium incapable of rewriting, the retrieval, reference and updating of the file information labels are carried out via a file information label storing file with the file names defined as keys. Thus it is possible to decrease the number of labels produced on the medium incapable of rewriting. As a result, the number of labels to be retrieved is decreased and the file processing performance is improved.
