In an electric wheelchair with an electric motor 9 associated with each driven wheel 3, the drive to the wheel 3 is disengageable by a coupling device 23 to permit free rotation of the wheel 3 on a spindle 10. The spindle 10 mounts a drive plate 12 for driven rotation by the motor 9 and the wheel 3 has a hub plate 16 with the coupling device 23 coupling the drive plate 12 and hub plate 16 together for driven rotation of the wheel 3. The coupling device 23 includes a coupling pin 24 mounted on one of the drive plate 12 and hub plate 16 which engages any one of a series of arcuately spaced holes 15 in the other of the drive plate 12 and hub plate 16 and is operable by a handle 28 to disengage the coupling pin 24 from the selected hole 15 to uncouple the drive to the wheel 3 when required. |
