The invention concerns an arrangement for gasifying carbon, formed by pyrolysis of biomass. The novel feature is that at least a substantial part of the raw pyrolytic gas formed upon pyrolysis is combusted in a combustion oven 17 which is in heat-exchange communication with a space 22 for steam. The steam is overheated in this space and is fed to the carbon bed for formation of water gas.
