The escalator for improving attachability and detachability of a handrail comprises a side panel (5) supporting the C-shaped handrail (2), an endless step (1) coactuating with the handrail, a skirt guard (13) disposed between the panel and the step, upper and lower support members (14,15), the other support members (19,20) connecting the upper and lower support members to a main frame (4), and a guide piece (22) disposed at the lower portion of the panel. The distance between the upper support member and the step is larger than the thickness of the handrail. The support member (20) holding the lower support member is connected to the main frame at the lower position compared with the returning passageway of the handrail.
