Contacts for a high-performance switch, which operates inside an evacuated package, contain Mo and W to improve the erosion characteristics and Cu to provide high conductivity. Separate phases of Cu, Mo and W are formed as shown by electron backscattering. The Cu-content is 5-80 vol.% while the Mo to W ratio is from 1:99 to 95:5 by weight. Some properties, such as hardness and conductivity, change monotonously as the W/Mo ratio changes but the breakthrough voltage performance shows 2 maxima. The discharge voltage of the switch, as measured with an element of wear included, can be improved by up to 5 times compared with a conventional 25 vol.% Cu, 75 vol.% W material.
