In ultrasonic imaging devices which operate in accordance with the pulse/echo method, time-delayed transmitted signals which result in artefacts in the ultrasonic image are generated by reflection of the echo signals at ultrasonic transducers (2 and 2'). According to the invention, echo signals are received in pairs from various directions in a temporally sequential fashion from an object (4) under investigation. Said signals are superimposed in a weighted manner in order to generate a location-dependent object function on which the pictorial representation is based. Artefact components in the echo signal can be largely suppressed by the weighted superimposition of the echo signals. Ultrasonic tomography. <IMAGE>
