In order to test a safety temperature cutout (3), a temperature detector (thermostat, thermal protector) (8) is assigned for the duration of the test an operating (switching) point which is a few temperature degrees above the operating point of the safety temperature cutout (3), with the result that a malfunction (maloperation, misoperation) of the safety temperature cutout (3) can be detected from the fact that the safety temperature cutout has not yet responded at the instant of response of the temperature detector (8). A device for testing the safety temperature cutout (3) has a temperature detector which can be switched over to a second output (12) of a setpoint (desired-value) generator (10) by means of a setpoint changeover switch (13), as well as a control logic (21) having a display device (27).
