Tensioning device for a chain or belt drive

In a hydraulic tensioning device, a spring element is provided between the transmission element that transmits the tensioning force and the piston interacting with the pressure space. In consequence, the tensioning force is effectively applied by the spring element and the hydraulic system now serves for the displacement of the point of support of the spring. This allows one to profit from the advantages of the prior-art tensioning devices for chain or belt drives. The varying volume of the hydraulic pressure space provides great freedom in the setting of the spring characteristic; since it is a spring element which applies the tensioning force, the response time to abrupt increases in tensioning force is extremely short. <IMAGE>
