PROCESS TO PRODUCE LOW HYDROGEN STEEL

In steel production by the AOD process, a low hydrogen content is obtained in the steel by using a dry refining vessel into which melt is charged: supplying dry cooling gas to the tuyers; completing all slag-forming additions to the melt prior to the start of decarburisation; fluxing the slag-forming additions prior to the start of decarburisation; completing all difficult-tooxidise alloying additions to the melt prior to the start of decarburisation; decarburising the melt to its aim carbon content by injection of an oxygen/dilution gas mixture through the tuyere; and maintaining the off-gas flow during the reduction and/or finishing steps by injecting sparging gas in amount 100 cu.ft.per ton of melt.
