The image processing system has an image memory for storing a digitised image before, during, and after correction. A working memory temporarily stores intermediate data of the image on correction. Density level extension devices extend the density level or gradiation of the image by repeatedly reading out the contents of the image memory and the working memory by using a matrix window containing picture elements of the image. A density slope detection device detects the extended density level, calculating a density slop or gradient by using the matrix window.
