2,2,2-Trifluoroethanol and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropyl alcohol are prepd. by catalytic hydrogenolysis of a compd. of formula (I) in the presence of catalyst contg. palladium metal. In (I), R1 is hydrogen or trifluoromethyl radical ; R2 is hydrogen atom or optionally fluorinated straight or branched C1-8 alkyl radical. The compds. are useful as energy recoverer, pharmaceutical product and solvent.
