An item of furniture, for example a table or a chair, has a supporting frame part 10 and a furniture part 15, for example a tabletop or a chair seat, which is displaceably connected to the frame part by means of a pair of telescopic parts 11, 14. The item of furniture furthermore has height adjustable elements 17, 18, 24 for adjustment of the height of the furniture part, the furniture part being moved in relation to the frame part. The height-adjustable elements comprise a pair of elongated force-transmitting elements 17, in the form, for example, of toothed racks, which can be fixed to the height-adjustable furniture part, and which each extend inside or along the respective telescopic parts 14. Rotatable elements 18, in the form of gear wheels, for example, are fitted to the frame part 15 and each engage for the transmission of a force with the respective force- transmitting elements 17. Releasable locking elements 25, which can be moved into or out of locking engagement with one of the rotatable elements and/or the force- transmitting elements, serve respectively to prevent and to permit adjusting movements of the adjustable furniture part 15. <IMAGE>
