The system has an intake mixture passageway with a negative pressure generating section. A second, upstream, negative generating section produces a weaker negative pressure than the first section. A fuel passageway (7) runs from a fuel supply via a metering jet (5) to the first negative pressure generating section. An electric device (8) controls the flow rate of fuel through this passageway. A negative pressure passageway (10) runs between the second negative pressure generating section, and the fuel passageway between the jet and the electric fuel flow rate controller. Level detector (12) generates a signal indicative of whether or not the level of the fuel column ascending through the negative pressure passageway is higher than a preset level.
