<p>Feed units for the controlled feed of air and a liquid fuel are provided in the reactor cover of an upright reactor. For the fuel feed, there is a feed pipe (7) provided with a spray nozzle (17). The feed pipe (7) is surrounded by an air duct (1, 4) which leads into a homogenisation chamber (19, 20). This chamber is provided with a refractory lining (18, 21) which surrounds the end of the feed pipe including the spray nozzle (17). A heat shield (16) in the form of a sleeve is fixed to the air baffle (15) and has an inward-directed, annular plate (22). This prevents hydrocarbons issuing from the nozzle from rising along the feed pipe (7) and forming deposits.
