Allyl ester of a carbapenem deriv. is deprotected, by (a) reacting with 1.0-1.5 mols. of pyrrolidine and catalystic organicsoluble Pd- complex having a coordinating phosphine ligand in an inert organic solvent at -50 to 30 deg.C for 10-240 mins. to cleave the allyl gp.; then (b) recovering carbapenem deriv. prod. Carbaoenem deriv. has an 2-substd. of formula (I). A is C1-6 straight or branched alkylene; R1 is opt. substd. aliphatic. cycloaliphatic, cycloaliphatic-aliphatic, aryl, araliphatic, heteroaryl, heteroaliphatic, heterocyclyl, or heterocyclylaliphatic; the ring comprises an N-contg. aromatic heterocycle attached to 1 ata ring-C and quaternised by R1.
