A power transmission system employs an endless belt having a toothed or ribbed friction surface (13) and a smooth surface, the belt passing over a correspondingly toothed or ribbed drive pulley (12) and over a smooth idler (14) with a half twist (15) between the two so that the smooth surface of the belt passes over the idler (14). A driven wheel (17) suitably grooved or ribbed engages the surface of the belt where it passes over the idler (14). The driven pulley (17) may be adjustable circumferentially about the axis of the idler (14). The invention is described by way of example as applied to the driving of the cutters (16) of a cylinder mower.
