An excavating tooth has a tooth point A' formed with a socket 27, so that it can sit on a tooth holder head B'' fixed by a vertical pin C'' on one side of the head. The head is formed with a groove to accommodate the pin and an elastic retaining element D, which runs transversely in relation to the longitudinal axis of the tooth point. The tooth point has at least one side wall, which runs backwards past the socket, and the side wall is formed with projecting parts 28, 29 at a vertical interval, which have forward-facing surfaces, which can bear against the pin, the head groove having a backward facing surface, which can bear against the pin between the surfaces that bear against the lugs. The head can thereby be designed so that a tight fit is obtained with the tooth point and a large bearing length, so that the combination is characterised by great wear resistance.
