23233-248 Ref. 3441 Dr. My/Jt0650 The present invention relates to hydrophilic, swellable polymers which consist of radicals of the general formula I (I) wherein R1 is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, R2 is, for example, carboxyl, sulphonyl or phosphonyl and R3 is hydrogen, methyl, ethyl or carboxyl and of radicals of a crosslinking agent which have originated from monomers having at least two olefinically unsaturated double bonds. The polymers are in the form of a highly porous, foam-like polyhedral structure and are useful as absorption agents for water and aqueous solutions.
