The seat and back are secured to brackets fixed to a shaft 8 which is supported in bearings fixed to the leg structure ; the shaft 8 is rotated by means of bevel gears from a shaft 10 which is rotated by means of a hand wheel 13. The locking means comprises a collar 16 slidably secured to the shaft 10 and carrying a pin which engages in holes in a fixed plate 14. The collar 16 is normally pressed towards the plate 14 by a spring, but is retracted for adjustment by a yoke 18 secured to a rod 19 operated by a finger-piece 191. A brace 20 comprising a U-shaped rod is mounted in bearings on the back, and may be let down to assist in supporting the chair when the back is in the reclining position.
