(57) The invention relates to a process for measuring the dimensions of a space, in particular a buccal cavity with upper and lower jaw dentition, using a scanning device which is introduced, at least partially, into the space to be measure, and to a device for carrying out this process. To obtain exact and essentially error-free measurement results, in particular in relation to the shape in particular of thetranslucent teeth of the upper and lower jaw dentitions, rapidly and with simplemanipulation, the scanning device used is an optical measurement device whose optical signals are converted into electronic signals which can be evaluated in a computer. The device for carrying out this process is essentially characterized by a source of optical radiation located in a preferably extra-oral section of the device and a projection device with a projection optical system which projects optical ra-diation onto the surfaces and/or translucent internal volume of the buccal cavity, and the coloured translucent volume of the teeth, a recording device with a record-ing optical system which records the radiation reflected from the surfaces and/or the translucent internal volume, and an evaluation device, located preferably in an extra-oral section of the device, which evaluates the recorded reflected radiation.
