A warewash machine (10) includes at least one collection tank (26) for collecting wash liquid that is recirculated by a pump (30) and sprayed for cleaning wares within a spray zone (20) of the machine. An overflow path (32) leads from the collection tank (26), and an automated valve (34) controls flow along the overflow path. A controller (100) is configured to control an open/closed state of the automated valve (34) based at least in part upon status of pump operation.
