The invention relates to a coating device for coating of a roll in a size press, of paper or cardboard or equivalent moveable substrate. The coating device comprises a rotary coating bar 11, 21, which extends over the length of the machine and inclines towards the moveable substrate 4, 5, which is braced, essentially along its entire length, against a ferrule 12, 22. The coating bar is designed to spread and even out coating material that is introduced into the coating device 10, 20 ahead of the coating bar 11,11 in the running direction of the moveable substrate 4, 5. According to the invention the coating bar 11, 21 is a plane bar of large diameter that is arranged against the moveable substrate 4, 5 in such a way that the profile of the coating material can be adjusted in a controlled manner. <IMAGE>
