In a system for the gas treatment of contaminated ground in situ which is accommodated in a shaft that is driven into the contaminated area of ground, a laminar circulatory gas flow is generated through the contaminated ground and the gaseous contaminants that are picked up by the system are filtered out and/or chemically active substances are added to the gas flow that contains the contaminants within the ground. In this way, the insoluble contaminants can be removed on the fly without the need to remove the ground.
