74284-1 There is disclosed a unique and improved fountain dampening solution basin for use with an offset printing press water roller. Problems with the transfer of dampening solution to a plate cylinder are encountered when the offset press heats up on long press runs. As more water is transferred to the plate cylinder, it mixes more with the ink and an emulsion produces a mist about the press. This produces ink droplets which collect in the fountain solution basin. Ink droplets in the fountain solution basin are picked up by the water roller and block the brush roller thereby decreasing the effectiveness of the dampening solution on the plate cylinder, causing smudging of the print. By placing a vertically oriented baffle in the basin, extending from the floor thereof, a predetermined level of water is maintained on the water roller side of the basin. The fountain dampening solution overflows to the opposite side of the baffle in a waterfall action. It is then removed from the basin through a drain. This flow over the baffle tends to draw the ink droplets to the baffle and over since they have a lower specific gravity than water. This eliminates the buildup of ink in the basin so that a constant even supply of water to the brush and plate roller can be maintained.
