The invention relates to copolymers containing carboxyl groups and having a thickener action and also containing, inter alia, units (a) and/or (b) and/or (c) derived from monoethylenically unsaturated monomers of the formula (I) <IMAGE> (I) and/or from polyunsaturated monomers of the formula (II) <IMAGE> (II) and/or from urethane group-containing monomers of the formula (III) <IMAGE> (III) where only one of the two radicals R1 and R2 in the formula (I) is ethylenically unsaturated, while both radicals R5 and R6 in the formula (II) are ethylenically unsaturated.
