The invention relates to upwardly directed, continuous casting, especially of castings of small cross section, such as wire, thin pipes and profiles. According to the invention, a crude casting structure can be crushed, i.e. the size of the grain is reduced by producing disturbances in the solidifying metal by moving the actual casting along its longitudinal axis. In order to produce this motion, the actual casting is deflected between the cooler and the drawing reels to both sides alternately. The size and rate of the deflection in relation to the drawing speed determines different motional forms for the casting. Since the movable masses are small in this device, it is possible to produce tight spasms in the casting.
