Plant-based, fermentation increasing cell prepn. (I) comprises partially dehydrated plant cells, incapable of reproduction, which increase glucose degradation by at least 50%. (I) contains at least one salt whose cation has a radius of not more than 1.33 Angstroms. The salt content is 0.2-4.5 wt.%. It also contains a C-source (selected from mono- or disaccharides, polyvalent alcohols and/or their oxidn. prods.) and an N-source (selected from peptones, peptides and amino acids). The plant cells are thermally partially dehydrated at 30-70 deg.C and the av. water content of the cells is 65% of their original value. The cells are then dialysed and spray-dried and (I) has a pH value of 4.5-7.5. The fermentation-raising factor of (I) is at least 2 and esp. 2.5-4.0. The total water content of (I) is 7-10%. (I) has an enriched content of 4-6C o-aminocarboxylic acids, nucleosides or nucleotides and the nucleic acids adenine, thymine and/or xanthine. USE/ADVANTAGE - Addn. of (I) to fermenting systems increases the rate of fermentation and (I) may be used to acid prodn. of ATP in adenosine- and phosphate-contg. yeast suspensions (I) are also useful as antioxidant in biological systems, in cosmetics and as aphrodisiacs for increasing fertility and potency. (I) may also be used in feedstuffs for increasing performances.
