This invention is directed to a novel hybrid regulatory region for directing and regulating transcription and translation of a gene sequence positioned downstream from the hybrid regulatory region. This hybrid regulatory region includes the promoter sequence of the phage lambda PR promoter-operator region fused to the operator sequence of the phage lambda PL promoter-operator region.
