The cable lead stripping tool, e.g. for communications cables, has a longitudinally sliding ram (2) with a head carrying a separation blade. The ram has a cooperating latch mechanism (3) which blocks its longitudinal displacement relative to the tool housing. An associated sensor (6) attached to the head of the ram allows the latch (3) to be released upon contact with the separation clamp contacts or an adjacent component.S Pref. the sensor (6) is coupled to the spring-loaded latch element (10) of the latch (3) via a sensor rod (9).
