1-Acylaminoalkyl-2-alkyl-2- imidazolines of formula (Ia) are new. In (Ia) R1 = a 7-25C fatty acid residue. Prodn. of 1-acylaminoalkyl-2-alkyl-2- imidazolines of formula (I) is effected by reacting one or more fatty acids R1COOH (II), opt. in ester and/or glyceride form, with a dialkylene triamine of formula H2NCH2CH2NH-R-NH2 (III) in a (II):(III) molar ratio of 1.9-2:1: (R = CH2CH2, CH2CH2CH2 or CH(Me)CH2CH2). The process is carried out by (a) heating (III) to 100-190 deg.C under an inert gas, (b) adding molten (II) preheated t 100-190 deg.C, (c) distilling off the H2O, alcohol and/or glycerol formed, (d) heating to 140-190 deg.C to complete amide formation, and (e) effecting cyclisation at a pressure of 50 mbar or less.
