Machine for cutting plate-like objects, (21) using a high energy water or laser beam (16) consists of a suspension device (25) for holding the object in a vertical plane with a vertically supported energy absorption device (28) located behind the object. The object is held by a clamp (23) or suction device (24) and can be located in bottom horizontal guides (11a,11b). The cutting head (16) is moveable in a vertical plane via horizontal (15) and vertical (12,13) guides. The energy absorption device is pref. loose ferromagnetic material held in a housing (27) by a magnetic field. ADVANTAGE - The absorption device does not act as a support for the object and so does not interfere with the cutting process as it becomes warm. This ensures clean cuts.
