PURPOSE:To discriminate automatically a tape which is used as a VTR or a tape which is used as a multi-track PCM, by recording a control signal for tracking, when the titled device is used as a VTR, and recording a pilot signal for tracking when it is used as a multi-track PCM. CONSTITUTION:When a magnetic recording and reproducing device is used as both a VTR and a multi-track PCM, a control signal is used, when a tracking signal is used as the VTR, and a pilot signal is used, when it is used as the multi-track PCM. In this way, when executing a reproduction, whether a pilot signal for tracking is reproduced or not is detected, and it is discriminated to be a multi-track PCM tape and a VTR tape, if said signal is reproduced, and unless it is reproduced, respectively. |
