PURPOSE:To obtain the nonlinear optical element by using a material which is heretofore not known to exhibit nonlinearity. CONSTITUTION:A glass thin film 2 is formed by depositing silica glass on a substrate 1 in the state of atoms, molecules or clusters. A strong electric field is impressed to this glass thin film 2, by which the nonlinear optical characteristic is obtd.
