The speed fluctuation of a diesel engine having electronic diesel control is evaluated using signals derived, e.g. from the measured time intervals between the successive passage of crankshaft reference marks past a fixed point. Averages of three successive such instantaneous measured values are calculated (12). The current instantaneous averaged value is estimated by linear extrapolation (10) from the last two calculated values of such. The estimation is effected immediately the last calculated value is available, the penultimate calculated value having been stored in a memory (14).
